Personality:
If there is one thing that is very important to understand about Rohan, it is that he is incredibly selfish and self-centered. As such, this means that Rohan does not typically get involved in the business of others unless there is something for him to gain from it personally. Typically, it's some form of inspiration for his manga, but there have been other self-motivated reasons for getting involved such as clearing his debt to Reimi since she sacrificed her life for his when he was a child. It can also simply be self-satisfaction and affirmation in his own abilities. Whatever the reason for helping, there just almost always is something in it for him or else he likely will look the other way.Debt: Rohan is interested in bringing Reimi Sugimoto and her dog, Arnold, back from the dead.
Rohan's self-absorbed nature also manifests itself into arrogance. In other words, Rohan doesn't just think about himself, but he's in love with himself as well. And it's not completely unfounded for him to be this way. Rohan is incredibly clever, a talented artist, and found success at a very young age. He is just unfortunately very aware of all that and thus is an obnoxious asshole about it. He boasts about his talents frequently, both in bombastic and subtle ways. When he's being more obvious in his bragging, it's usually long rambling philosophizing about art, inspiration, creativity, reality, etc. When he's being a little more subtle, he tends to just say it without any grandeur, maybe toss in a line or two about how he supposedly doesn't care. And speaking of things he doesn't care about, although he claims not to care about money or fame, that has never stopped Rohan from being materialistic and owning more than one vehicle, ridiculously expensive (and pretentious) furniture, or a Gucci watch. And whether Rohan will admit it or not, he thrives on attention from others and/or disparaging them. He has incredibly high standards that are essentially impossible for others to meet, giving him a means to act and talk as though he is superior in every way imaginable.
But even though Rohan does have a tendency to be mean-spirited towards others, he is one of those people who typically says the opposite of what he means. (In case you missed that part.) For example, he really resents and doesn't like Josuke (the protagonist of Part IV) all that much, but he probably wouldn't spend so much time hating him if he didn't have a modicum of respect for the kid. Likewise, towards the end, he does actually say some positive things about Koichi (the only character he willingly admits to being friends with) and Reimi both. So, it's not that he can't make friends or that he always look down on people, but Rohan has a very ass-backwards means of showing that he cares — for example, offering incredibly blunt advice without being asked for it that others would likely consider mean — and he is furthermore not quite as self-centered as he presents. Which isn't to say that it's all a facade. Rohan Kishibe is definitely very up his own butt. He just crawls out sometimes to do a good deed after some coaxing.
The other important thing about Rohan to understand is his passion for his art. Rohan is more or less addicted to his art and the attention he gets for it. Although he has a tendency to be dismissive of fans, it would not sit well with Rohan to have his genius ignored or misunderstood (which is part of the reason why his comics aren't translated into English as he feels Americans just "wouldn't get it"). To achieve his great art, Rohan has an obsessive need to capture reality. He wants to tell stories that connect with people on a deeper level, that have a rawness to them that cannot be duplicated. At the same time though, because of Rohan's need to be noticed (and liked), he is still very selective about what meets that criteria and he is rapacious when it comes to finding new material.
This means that Rohan will go to any lengths for that new inspiration, including abusing his Stand abilities to either read about or outright steal memories from people. Rohan has no qualms about this because although he's capable of making friends through some small miracle, he is relatively unaware when it comes to people outside of himself. He doesn't see it as a bad thing or even morally questionable to be so invasive. He is furthering his art, which by his estimation is a gift unto the world in the first place. Initially, even though he knows full well taking too much from people can and will kill them, Rohan doesn't see it as such a bad thing. The way he sees it, they're contributing something greater than they possibly could have otherwise. No big deal, right? Fortunately, Rohan learns his lesson after doing this to Koichi and Josuke stops him, and while he will still absolutely open people up to look at their personal business — usually with a reason such as identifying the person as friend or foe — he has gotten out of the habit of just tearing pages out.
Naturally, aside from questionable actions like that, this arrogance and near-willful ignorance about others also leads Rohan to overestimate himself and underestimate others. So, things don't always go his way. And when that happens? Rohan gets childish and he gets spiteful. For example, in playing a game of dice with Josuke, he is absolutely certain Josuke is cheating. But he can't quite figure out how. The obvious solution in this situation is to nearly stab off his own finger with a pen and refuse to let Josuke heal it until he's figured out how Josuke is cheating. You might be wondering why he didn't just use Heaven's Door then to solve it, but when Rohan feels his own abilities are being questioned or challenged, he has to answer them without the use of his Stand. Rohan is also incredibly vengeful and whenever a Stand user is handing him his own ass, he makes pretty steep promises of revenge. And sometimes he follows through such as when he writes "I will go to Hell" on the Stand Cheap Trick when Cheap Trick is being dragged away by creepy hands reaching in the spirit realm, dragging it off to who the heck knows where.
In short, Rohan is indeed arrogant and self-serving. He looks down upon others, seeing them as inferior and does not hesitate to point that out to them when the opportunity arises as he is often very mean-spirited. He becomes petty, spiteful, and vindictive when he is being challenged or feels he's losing. His passion lies only with his art and he is willing to do most anything for the sake of said art, including (and certainly not limited to) abusing his Stand abilities to violate the privacy of others. However, Rohan also understands right from wrong. He has learned a few boundaries here and there and ultimately stands on the side of good regardless of how he goes about it or why he decides to do it in the first place. Moreover, even with his usual flagrant disregard for others, Rohan has a tendency to say the opposite of what he means when it comes to people he knows. He doesn't have any problem in lying or being mean to them, and he may somewhat put himself first, but he does actually have a few caring bones in his body. Just don't try to point them out or he'll accuse you of being a filthy liar and probably make fun of your hair or something like the grown-ass adult he is.

The Last Voyages is set on a Barge that travels through space and time. Its passengers are a crew of wardens and inmates. Wardens make a deal with the Admiral — the overseer of this little endeavor — and seek to redeem inmates that they are paired up with. Inmates are individuals who are in need of redemption, but unlike wardens are not immediately given all of their powers and are unable to return to their own worlds during their stay. Initially, Rohan sought to use this place as a means for more inspiration both based upon his experiences in floods/breaches/ports and with other characters, as well as the end goal of his deal with the Admiral.Inventory:
Rohan did not make many friend initially when he arrived on the Barge. He was arrogant and he immediately presented himself as a know-it-all. But that's not what cost Rohan so dearly in terms of earning points with other people. When he crossed paths with Cassel Sharpe, he used his Stand, Heaven's Door, on him and wrote within his pages that he had to use his ability to transform a certain number of items per day as well as removed his ability to harm Rohan after he discovered that Cassel intended to pull a knife on him. Cassel sat on this for a while, but eventually consulted with someone else and outed Rohan to the entire ship. Things were in an uproar for a long time. Most people condemned what Rohan did, overlooking any wrongdoing on Cassel's part and they were displeased with the Admiral — the overseer of this operation — for not demoting Rohan from warden to inmate, which would strip him of his Stand and not allow him to leave until he had earned graduation through redemption. Horatio Hornblower, however, took up an argument in Rohan's favor. While he did not approve of Rohan's actions, he found the mob mentality deplorable especially once Arthas Menethil took matters into his own hands and killed Rohan, making him an example for anyone else who attempted to control others through mental means. After that, Rohan didn't feel particularly safe and with the exception of Horatio, he trusted no one when Crowley, Arthas' warden, took no disciplinary actions against Arthas and even deemed the murder itself acceptable because it was thought out.
Of course, Horatio wasn't the only person who demonstrated some kindness to him initially. Although Iris felt that Cassel was justified, she demonstrated pity and care for him in the aftermath of his murder as coming back to life results in a sickness for a time after. Their relationship remained distant through Rohan's time on the Barge, but it ceased its initial antagonism after that. Dedicate Rosethorn, likewise, demonstrated similar care towards Rohan and continued to somewhat mother him where he frequently told her it was not wanted. From there, Rohan learned to care about Rosethorn. He asked her for assistance with a gift, he gave her presents that he thought she would like and appreciate for the holidays, and he even drew Hugh Cambridge, a man he despised, after he left because he knew of his importance to Rosethorn. A more complicated (and sadly never positive) relationship developed between Rohan and Tiffany Doggett. Although Tiffany demonstrated some understanding and compassion towards Rohan in private, she had no qualms in insulting and degrading him in public when Hugh Cambridge began insulting him in public. Rohan values honesty and reality, so he quickly decided that a friendship with Tiffany was not desirable, but she quickly misconstrued it as sentimentality and that his feelings had been hurt as a result of her comments. The two never were able to fully repair their relationship after Tiffany's inmate, Lourdes, left the Barge. Rohan had known Lourdes briefly, but well enough to know that Tiffany attempted to make good on her promise to always protect her by going to her world, Tiffany would only be in the way and likely bring her former inmate to more harm. He also pointed out that keeping this promise was more about Tiffany than it was Lourdes, which angered Tiffany. Rohan and Tiffany spoke intermittently, but never for long before it spiraled into an argument as Rohan found Tiffany's willingness to follow to be disdainful, especially when Tiffany continued to deny it.
Rohan also continued to have a complicated relationship with Cassel. Much of Rohan's initial disgust from Cassel came from reading his pages using Heaven's Door, as he was privy to Cassel's narrative about his life. But it especially came from the way he treated a girl named Lila Zacharov as she was little more than an object or a prize to be pined for and eventually won. What Rohan found extremely deplorable was the fact that Cassel had transformed her into a cat, but shirked all responsibility because of his brother wiping his memories, and his continued mistreatment of her when his mother altered Lila's emotions to make her in love with him. Rohan eventually had a chance to meet Lila in person when Cassel was swapped with her during a flood. He expressed his disgust for Cassel to her, but also his admiration and managed to earn Lila's trust well enough that she let him use his ability on her after he drew her. In exchange, Lila used her ability to manipulate dreams on Rohan. Rohan continued to draw Lila, to write her story based in reality rather than Cassel's skewed perspective, as well as recreate the dreams she gave him. In the meanwhile, he had Cassel to contend with. As it turns out, Cassel actually agreed with Rohan and Horatio that his preferential treatment during the debacle was not okay, and that it was far too easy for Cassel to slip up with just a little encouragement from others despite having graduated from inmate to warden himself quite a long while ago. Rohan, on the other hand, refused to accept this as genuine at first. Instead, he made it his hellbent mission to stay on the Barge and graduate his inmate at all costs just to prove to Cassel that he hadn't won in the end. Or, well, that's the point he somewhat made before throwing up on Cassel's shoes. Cassel got the message, however, and made Rohan a kitten with his transformation powers — which Rohan would later name Copic — and regarded Rohan with a little more respect and far less antagonism than he had before. Rohan remained skeptical of Cassel's sincerity in wanting to change, but come Christmas, he altered a Japanese myth to include details related to Cassel's relationship to Lila as a warning about the consequences of not changing. The message was received and by the time Cassel left the Barge, he promised that he would continue to try and do better.
These were not the only relationships, however, that stemmed from the debacle with Cassel. Shortly after Rohan was murdered and revived, he was paired with Leonard Snart, also (and more likely) known as Captain Cold. At first, Cold was wary of being anywhere near Rohan. He didn't think that Rohan was going to use his abilities on him, but that didn't mean he could 110% trust that he wouldn't. Still, small efforts were made and Cold began trying to both get Rohan more engaged with him/less hands off, and find out more about what makes Rohan tick. Of course, this only served to antagonize Rohan and Rohan frequently would even go so far as to ignore messages that came through the communicator because he refused to hold Cold's hand through the process of graduation. Basically, it was the most spiteful pairing in the history of warden-inmate pairings, but eventually, the two managed to find a common language when Rohan gifted Cold with the first volume of his manga in English. As their relationship progressed, however, there was more than that at play. Rohan's purpose being on the Barge had changed a great deal before they were finally able to see eye-to-eye. He went from a desire for more inspiration to wishing to spitefully remain in the wake of consequences for what he did to Cassel.
But what really mattered most was that Rohan got a chance to talk to Reimi again. From Rohan's place in the timeline back home, Reimi had already moved on. So, in many ways, this was a chance Rohan didn't think he'd ever get again. During the course of the conversation, Rohan explained why he was on the Barge — that he was a warden, not an inmate, and that he was going to see things through to the end — and Reimi told him that she was proud of him. This sparked inspiration to change his deal to remember Reimi, and allowed Rohan to put a more sincere effort forward in working with Cold once they finally found their footing. It was many months before Rohan told Cold that he changed his deal to regaining the memories he had suppressed of Reimi, but eventually the trust between the two of them had built to that extent that he was able.
From that point on, in some ways, Rohan and Cold were a match made in heaven. Cold had no interest in becoming a self-sacrificing hero and Rohan was a perfect example and guide in how to still be on the side of good without being self-sacrificing. Rohan himself doesn't particularly subscribe that much to that way of thinking and he most certainly doesn't believe that people should have to strictly adhere to a dichotomous sense of right and wrong. He believes right/wrong depends far more on situation and perspective, and that's more or less what he passed along to Cold with a little bit of time and effort. In the end, Cold forcibly graduated in the interest of allowing Rohan to leave the Barge and escape something deadly that was on the horizon. However, Rohan refused to leave because at that point in time, Lila was on the Barge and as were the aforementioned individuals that he developed relationships with. Although Rohan wasn't seeking to self-sacrifice, he also was not willing to give up so quickly and readily.
Plus, he had another deal to make.
In addition to changing his deal to gaining back his memories of Reimi, Rohan also swore that he would find a way to bring Reimi and Arnold back to life, and give them both the chances they deserve to live full and happy lives. Thus, he was paired with Lila Zacharov and intent on staying. Of course, not everything works out quite that way. Shortly after their time spent in the Land of the Dead where souls had to be reunited with bodies and the Barge re-powered all while avoiding souls of the dead who might want revenge and harpies, Lila disappeared from the Barge and was sent back home. And so was Jolyne Cujoh.
Well before Cold graduated, Jolyne Cujoh joined the Barge as a warden. Rohan took an immediate interest in her as she was the first Stand user he had come across since he came to the Barge only to discover that she was Jotaro Kujo. Jotaro is one of the few people that Rohan respects, so he immediately took it upon himself to look after her in a sense. For her, Rohan filled in all the missing little details about Jotaro's time in Morioh — which Jolyne had never been privy to due to her father's secrecy and attempts at keeping Jolyne uninvolved in the Joestar family legacy — and likewise learned about her untimely demise in just a short thirteen years from Rohan's perspective. Infuriated by Jolyne following in her father's footsteps, he urged her to look after herself first.
With these recent losses, Rohan decided it was time to move on and find another way to bring Reimi back. He had done all that he could on the Barge.

Abilities:
Rohan is what's known as a Stand user. Canon is a little inconsistent as to the exact nature of Stands — whether it's spiritual energy or what — but the basic gist is that a Stand gives users special powers, can only been seen by other Stand users, can only be damaged by another Stand, and is connected to their user. With regards to that last item, if a Stand is destroyed, then its user dies and vice versa. Rohan's Stand is called Heaven's Door. Heaven's Door is not very useful in a fight, but it has good speed, durability, and average precision with a range of approximately 50 meters (164 feet). (Note: The further away from his Stand Rohan is, the weaker Heaven's Door is. Given that he doesn't use it much for fighting, this isn't all that important, but it should still be noted.)Strengths and Weaknesses:
Heaven's Door's main abilities are activated when individuals see an image of the Stand drawn by Rohan (it can be on paper or even drawn in the air with a finger) or see the Stand itself. More than one person can be affected at a time. It can also affect animals.
The first of its abilities is Book Transmutation. This essentially turns his target's body into pages from a book. It's freaky body horror where faces flip open or limbs/bodies can unfurl. People are often varying degrees of awareness while turned into books. Some people are awake and know what's happening (while being unable to do much about it), others pass out. The pages display information about the target that is absolutely true. It can be anything from what they look like to memories and thoughts to personality traits or information on special abilities. People literally become open books to Rohan which allows him to enact Memory Removal and Write-In Command as he sees fit. The former is fairly straightforward. Rohan yanks out pages and targets lose memories as well as lose body mass (without actually losing height or shape). Take too much and they die. The latter ability is also straightforward as he just writes in whatever he wants, allowing him to alter memories or create commands. Rohan cannot use these abilities on himself nor can he access memories for which he was present (because duh...).
He's also inhumanly fast at working on his comic series and is able to churn out pages at a ridiculous speed when he's feeling incredibly inspired such as drawing and inking 19 new pages overnight without anyone to help him. He still moves at a stupidly fast pace even when not inspired though.
...His eyeliner game is also really strong. Don't fuck with him.
+ INTELLIGENCE. Rohan is an extremely intelligent individual. Although he technically has only completed high school, Rohan thinks at incredibly quick speeds that allow for him to devise strategies on the fly that will result in him gaining the upper hand.( SAMPLE )
+ PERCEPTIVE. Coupled with the above, even without Heaven's Door, Rohan is extremely perceptive when it comes to other people. He often is able to get quick reads on their personalities, strengths and weaknesses. Heaven's Door really just enhances his ability to be accurate and cuts out some of the legwork of studying the person for a while.
+ OBJECTIVE. Rohan is not easily swayed by opinion or people's perceptions. He has a strong preference for adhering to what he believes to be the truth/reality. It serves as his inspiration for his manga, but also as his way of life. Rohan is not particularly fond of people who try to bullshit, cheat, or lie in any context.
+ SELF-DETERMINED. Related to the above, Rohan walks to the beat of his own drum. While sometimes this can cause problems because he often challenges social conventions, Rohan also has the tendency to challenge others into walking more of their own path through example and that tension. While he will never hold anyone's hands or tell them directly what to do, he does have the tendency to ask questions and point out faulty logic about why others might be behaving in certain ways.
+ ARTISTIC. It goes without saying that Rohan has an appreciation for finer things in life, including art. Art is everything to Rohan. He uses it as a means of strengthening his Stand abilities and he uses it as a means of expressing himself and communicating his experiences. He's exceptionally talented, able to move at near inhuman speeds when he's drawing without making a single mistake. He's also well-accomplished given that he has been publishing for the past three years.
- BLUNT. While sometimes this is a positive trait about Rohan with certain people, this causes more problems than it helps solve. Rohan doesn't believe in sugarcoating his opinions, thoughts, or feelings. He simply says what he thinks, sometimes without being asked, and that often leads to hurt feelings or aggravation one way or another. He doesn't always provide what he's thinking to be an asshole, however. Sometimes he does it to try and help, and it just has the tendency to blow up in his face.
- ARROGANT. Although Rohan does strongly adhere to the notion of being as objective as humanly possible, he is also arrogant as hell. Rohan takes extreme pride in his accomplishments and has no problem waving his many talents and skills in others' faces. Needless to say, this gets obnoxious and rubs people the wrong way pretty quickly, but it also sometimes leaves Rohan a little blind to some of his weaknesses because he may be a little quick to then blame the other person for whatever social discomfort is occurring.
- TEMPER. Point blank, Rohan is often very irritable. Because of the massive size of his ego, Rohan can get easily riled up into a fairly agitated state. In particular, if Rohan's competency or skills are questioned, he tends to kick things into high gear (for example, stabbing off part of his finger because he knew Josuke was cheating and couldn't figure out why, and he was pretty sure Josuke was mocking him on the inside). Rohan is extremely vindictive and spiteful. He knows how to hold a grudge like no other when he sets his mind to it.
- ISOLATED. Rohan craves social contact and connections more than he'll ever let on to other people. But Rohan behaves in ways such as the aforementioned arrogance and catty traits that tends to make it difficult for other people to like him. As a result, Rohan is often left managing problems on his own. In the past, it's easy to extrapolate that he rarely if ever asked for help. Which is a problem in all of itself, but Rohan eventually gets to the place where he's able to ask Koichi for help and does not immediately receive it, allowing a bad situation to get even worse. In short, if Rohan could be a little nicer, he might not have quite such a hard time.
- IMMATURE. ...Honestly, this probably doesn't need much elaboration. But Rohan is pretty immature for his age despite his success. He plays pretend at being an adult more than he's actually acting like one. He does things like pretend like he's not home so he doesn't have to talk to people instead of just answering the door and saying he doesn't want to talk/spend time with that person. He's extremely petty and will hold grudges against someone until the end of the time, such as his grudge against Josuke still thriving despite the fact Josuke saved his life once.
Characterization Sample: In which Rohan reluctantly was sharing memories.
